Atos Origin has completed one of the largest ever SAP implementations in the oil and gas industry for Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil producer. The aim was to replace ageing and expensive legacy systems, streamline and improve business processes, and make cost and efficiency savings.
"The Saudi Aramco SAP project has been unique. We presented the greatest implementation challenge."
Dr. Ibrahim S. Mishari, vice president of Information Technology.
Business Challenges
The project required a phased implementation and the establishment of a strong partnership. More than 170 systems have been replaced with a single, integrated SAP R/3 system that covers all core functions and SAP modules, and now serves 23,000 people across the company in 200 major locations worldwide.
All the major challenges associated with completing such a business critical implementation without disrupting the company's operations, such as the need for a simultaneous go-live of over 40 plants, were successfully overcome. The system was delivered on time and covers the world's largest on-shore and off-shore oil fields, refineries, NGL plants, 30+ gas oil separation plants, 30+ bulk plants, 3 marine terminals, 11 airports, pipelines, a fleet of crude oil carriers, and service stations.
The result provides more accurate and timely information to support business processes and a more timely response to changing business requirements and technology. Today, Atos Origin remains closely involved with Saudi Aramco, assisting in both maintaining the application as well as strategically evaluating the implementation of the mySAP business suite of products and other strategic projects throughout the organization.
