The global telecommunication industry has gone through a period of unprecedented economic difficulty and change. A shake-out is taking place in the market and the players that remain will need to be stronger and smarter. New business models are emerging and the increase in the number of suppliers (access, service, content, etc.) add to the complexity of the supply chain or "value web".
New challenges also lie ahead such as the 3G (3rd Generation) build out, Wireless LAN, broadband and data services. Customers also have to be convinced of the value of these new services and Telcos need to capitalize on their customer base, maintaining loyalty and growing market share.
Telcos find themselves in a highly competitive market with European and national regulatory agencies increasingly imposing price cuts and the demand from operators to deliver cost base pricing for use of their access networks and termination of traffic. And although most Telcos have cut their budgets substantially, the market is expected to pick-up in the next few years.
