Torino 2006

The Olympic Games serve to highlight our unique skills/experiences, our ability to work successfully in teams, with other organizations, and our success in integrating people, processes, products and technologies.

As the lead systems integrator for the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic Games, Atos Origin managed a consortium of technology partners and suppliers to install and manage the Olympic IT infrastructure and systems. We operated the Main Technology Center, the Integration Test Lab, the PC Factory, and several data centers used for primary storage and back-up disaster recovery. We also handled the data and information security protecting the entire IT infrastructure of the Games.

The 2006 Winter Olympic Games took place in seven venues in and around Torino, Italy. Over 2,500 athletes competed in 15 disciplines including skiing, ice hockey and snowboarding. Also involved were:

  • 7 International Sports Federations
  • 85 National Olympic Committees
  • 2,500 team officials (coaches, assistants, doctors, etc.)
  • 650 referees and judges
  • 10,000 media representatives
  • 21,000 volunteers
  • 2,300 members of the IOC, National Olympic Committees and Federations

Atos Origin put in place and tested an Olympic scale infrastructure, simulating hundreds of different scenarios for the busiest days of the Games. The Olympic IT infrastructure consisted of:

  • 385 Intel-based servers and Unix boxes
  • 5,000 Computers
  • 700 Printers
  • 950 Commentator Information systems terminals
  • 770 Intranet terminals
  • 100,000 hours of testing

Once the Olympic Games began, the Atos Origin-led IT team worked 24/7 to monitor the IT systems and infrastructure across all the Olympic venues. It ensured that all results and athlete information was transmitted accurately and instantly to 10,000 media representatives, as well as the official Torino 2006 website and news and press agencies.
